In a major development in eBay's patent case, the U.S. government filed an Amicus Brief supporting MercExchange. The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case on March 29th. At issue is whether MercExchange is entitled to an injunction against eBay's Buy It Now feature. In 2003, a jury found the feature infringed on MercExchange's patent.
Overstock Auctions will be replacing its volume-discount program for sellers with a subscription plan. The company will release more details in the coming weeks.
Top eBay PowerSeller Sell2All has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. This is the second high-profile PowerSeller to close this year. Glacier Bay DVD closed its business early last month . Unlike Sell2All, Glacier Bay DVD was a BuySafe bonded seller. BuySafe CEO Jeff Grass explains what happened.
CyberSource acquired online payment service BidPay for $1.8 million dollars. CyberSource will re-launch it in the coming months, but it's not known if BidPay will remain a way for eBay buyers to order money-orders online.
Online bookselling site Abebooks.com has acquired FillZ, which helps booksellers list their books on ten online marketplaces including Amazon, eBay Stores, Abe, Alibris and Half.com. ***
Australian newspaper group John Fairfax Holdings is buying New Zealand online-auction site Trade Me for $466 million dollars ---. Trade Me has 1.2 million members.
In funding news, gNumber secured $1.5 million dollars to expand its phone-bidding solution for eBay users called Unwired Buyer. Ecommerce-management firm Infopia closed a second round of venture capital funding for $8 million dollars.
It's Spring, and that means it's trade show season. Jack Ma, CEO of Yahoo China and Alibaba, will give the keynote address at Search Engine Strategies in China, this weekend. Alibaba operates a business auction site and owns C2C auction site TaoBao.
WebmasterWorld's Search-Engine & Internet-Marketing Conference will be held in Boston, April 18 through 20th, and will feature a Keynote Speech by Malcolm Gladwell, author of "The Tipping Point" and "Blink." The conference is geared to Webmasters and anyone involved in Search-Engines, Online Advertising, or Affiliate programs.
Registration for the fifth annual eBay Live conference has opened. The 3-day event takes place this year in Las Vegas June 13 through 15, ----- with classes, an exhibit hall, and networking. About 10,000 people attended last year's event in eBay's hometown of San Jose, California. eBay's Developer Conference takes place June 10th through 12 at the same venue.
eBay named Bob Swan its Chief Financial Officer, replacing Rajiv Dutta who is leaving that post to become President of Skype.. President of eBay International - Matt Bannick - will transition out of that role in order to spearhead eBay's corporate philanthropy initiatives. Bannick has been with eBay since 1999.
CompUSA announced that stores in Nevada will offer eBay consignment services. Consignors can choose to redeem their sales in cash or CompUSA gift cards.
